Museo Storico Navale di Venezia (Riva San Biasio Castello, tel. 041-244 1399)

Established after World War I, this swashbuckling collection documents Venice’s naval history from its days as a powerful maritime republic through modern times. Forty-two exhibition halls are spread across five floors of a 15th-century municipal granary. In addition to uniforms, nautical instruments, and various mementoes from Venice’s shipbuilding industry, the museum has a large model collection that includes World War II battleships, submarines, and frigates. The highlight by far is the model of the Bucintoro, the doge’s ceremonial state barge (the original was destroyed by Napoleon’s troops). Among its other treasures are a replica of the galeazza (large galley) that Venetian forces used to defeat the Turkish navy at the Battle of Lepanto and Peggy Guggenheim’s tricked-out gondola. The entry ticket also gives admission to the adjacent Padiglione Delle Navi (Hall of Ships) on the Tana Canal. Erected in the 16th century as a workshop to make and repair oars for Venetian galleys, the hall showcases a number of historic vessels, including the Scalé Reale. This early 19th-century ceremonial boat was used by King Vittorio Emanuele on a visit to mark Venice’s joining the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
